To run for office, you must complete the prescribed Nomination Form. Take the completed Nomination Form, the filing fee of $200.00 for the position of Mayor or $100.00 for all other positions, and your identification into the Municipal Clerk's Office. The deadline to file your Nomination Form is 2:00 p.m. on September 12, 2014.

Nomination Process:

Nominations will be accepted for the above offices from January 2, 2014 to September 11, 2014 during regular office hours (8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) Monday to Friday and on Nomination Day Friday September 12, 2014 between 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. No faxed or other electronically transmitted nomination paper will be accepted.

For School Boards, the designated Clerk may delegate responsibility to receive nominations; however the designated Clerk must certify the nominations.

Nominations will be accepted in the following manner only:

  • The nomination must be on the prescribed Nomination Form and accompanied by the prescribed filing fee of $200.00 for the head of Council and $100.00 for all other offices,
  • The filing fee is payable by cash, debit, certified cheque or money order.

NOTE: A Candidate for an office is entitled to receive a refund of the nomination filing fee if he or she withdraws, is elected, or receives more than 2% of the votes cast in the election for the office.

All nominees must provide identification to the Clerk when filing their nomination paper. All nominees running for Councillor must decide prior to filing which Ward they wish to represent.

NOTE: Facsimile transmissions or mailed in nomination forms are not permitted. The onus is on the person nominated for election to an office to file a bona fide nomination paper.

Candidate Qualifications

A person is qualified to be elected for municipal office who, as of the day he or she files his or her nomination is:

  1. Entitled to be an elector under Section 17 of the Municipal Elections Act, (MEA)
  2. For an upper tier municipality, must be entitled to be an elector under Section 17 of the MEA in a lower tier municipality within the upper tier municipality,
  3. Not disqualified for violations of financial requirements or violations of requirements for filing financial information,
  4. Not disqualified by any Act from holding such office,
  5. Not disqualified under the provisions as outlined in Sections 90(3) and 91(1) of the MEA.

It is the responsibility of the candidate to determine whether they are qualified to be an elector to hold the office for which they are nominated.

Election Signs

Election signs cannot be posted until after Nomination Day (September 12, 2014). All signs must be removed by November 3, 2014.
