Municipal Heritage Committee

The Town of Saugeen Shores is committed to preserving the heritage of the former Towns of Port Elgin, Southampton and the Township of Saugeen.   Each community is rich in its own heritage, which the Municipal Heritage Committee is active in preserving.

Municipal Heritage Committee

The Municipal Heritage Committee (formerly LACAC) meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. (subject to change) at the Municipal Offices, 600 Tomlinson Drive, Port Elgin, ON.  The current members of the Committee are:  Diane Huber, Council Representative, Chair Joyce Johnston, Brenda Maguire, Duncan McCallum, Ken Pace, Audrey Underwood and Tracey Edwards, Secretary.

Walking Tours

The Town of Saugeen Shores has developed a Walking Tour for both the former Towns of Port Elgin and Southampton.  The tours highlight heritage buildings and places of interest within the Towns.  The Committee plans to develop a Driving Tour for the former Township of Saugeen.

Original copies of the Walking Tour can be found at the Chamber of Commerce locations in Southampton and Port Elgin, as well as the Municipal Office. 

Heritage Property Plaque Program

The Municipal Heritage Committee has a "Heritage Property Plaque Program" which defines historic architectural properties that are over 50 years of age and provide some insight into the community's heritage.   The Plaque identifies the year the house was constructed, the original owner of the historic building and their occupation at the time of construction.

Heritage Conservation Award

The Committee also has a "Heritage Conservation Award Program" to recognize individual contribution to the promotion of heritage in the Town of Saugeen Shores.  The guidelines for the Heritage Conservation Award Candidate are:

  • Voluntary public promotion of the importance of preserving significant heritage structures
  • Leadership in the restoration and preservation of heritage structures (buildings, bridges, etc.)
  • Long standing voluntary service as a member of a Municipal Heritage Committee or other organization dedicated to preserving heritage structures
  • Personal collections of local artifacts, heritage photographs or memorabilia that are shared with the community to promote appreciation of heritage

Provincially Designated Heritage Properties

The Town of Saugeen Shores may designate heritage properties by By-law pursuant to Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, based on criteria set forth in Ontario Regulation 9/06.  See here for the current list of designated properties.
