Southampton Flag
The Southampton Flag, Located at Millard Blvd, flies magestically 135' in the air. The giant flag measures 25 feet by 50 feet. A group of volunteers, "Friends of the Flag" formed in the fall of 1992 to launch and erect a Flag Pole for the commemoration of the 135th anniversary of Southampton. A Canadian flag was chose to honour the Town, the Nation and the history of the area. It is visible from out on the lake and also high on the hill along High Street. It is a wonderful addition to the cenetaph; which honours the Town and Saugeen Reserve war dead. The park just below the flag, named 'Dominion Park or Lookout', has a wishing well, dedication plaques, and beautiful beach views. The park was dedicated on July 1, 1994. During rough winds and foul weather, the big flag is taken down and stored for safety reasons. Sometimes a smaller flag is raised if weather is just slightly inclement. |
