SAUGEEN SHORES DESIGNATED AS BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

Town receives Bronze Award from Share the Road

Saugeen Shores, ON; Saugeen Shores is now officially a Bicycle Friendly Community through Share the Road’s designation program becoming the first community in Bruce County to receive the honour. The Town received the bronze award at the Ontario Bike Summit in Toronto on April 1.

“Receiving this designation is a testament to the effort our municipal staff and the community have put into cycling over the past few years,” says Mayor Luke Charbonneau who accepted the award Monday evening. “It is a result of partnerships between the Town, local businesses, community groups, volunteers, cycling organizations and our local police service.”

In 2017 Saugeen Shores embarked on a journey to become more bike friendly, which included the launch of the Bruce County-Southwest Ontario by Bike Network, development of a bicycle-friendly community work plan, new bike racks and repair stations, community events and the extension of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail through Saugeen Shores. At that time, Saugeen Shores received on honourable mention from the Bicycle Friendly Community program.

“We’ve carried the momentum forward from 2017 and continued to improve our cycling programs, events and infrastructure”, says Mayor Charbonneau. “Focusing on the 5 ‘Es’ of the program has allowed us to build a strong foundation for cycling in our community.”

Share the Road’s Bicycle Friendly Communities program focuses on Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, and Evaluation and Planning to ensure communities provide the necessary tools for cyclists to safely enjoy their roads and trails.
