What is an Official Plan?

An Official Plan sets out how the Town wants land to be used for the next 20 years. An Official Plan:

  • makes sure that growth is coordinated and meets our needs
  • helps all members of Saugeen Shores understand how their land may be used now and in the future
  • helps decide where roads, parks, trails and other services will be built
  • provides a framework for how our Zoning By-law sets local regulations and standards, like the size of lots and height of buildings
  • provides a way to evaluate and settle conflicting land uses while meeting Town, County and provincial interests
  • shows our commitment to the future growth of Saugeen Shores

How do I find the Official Plan designation on my property?

What if what I want to do isn't allowed in the Official Plan?

You may not need to do anything. Our Zoning By-law regulates what you can and cannot do if all you are looking to do is build a building. If you want to create a new lot or build a subdivision you need to meet the standards in our Official Plan.

The Town's Official Plan may be changed if you can justify what you want to do in an Official Plan Amendment.

Approval isn't guaranteed, but you do have the opportunity to apply for a change. Our Staff would be happy to assist you.
