Any property within the boundaries of the former towns of Port Elgin and Southampton is serviced by Westario Power. Any property outside those boundaries (in the former Saugeen Township) is serviced by Hydro One.

What Is a Utility Locate? |
Prior to excavating, a utility locates request prompts utility owners to confirm the location of utilities that a project could potentially impact. Utility owners will ensure that utilities within your project area are properly marked with paint and/or flags and that the excavator has an up-to-date drawing, or locate sketch, to avoid utility damage/strikes. Like other municipalities, the Town of Saugeen Shores submits a locate request at the planning stage for any of its approved projects to determine the location of utilities. Locates will assist in identifying issues with buried infrastructure for future planning initiatives. |
Red & Orange Flags/Paint: What Do They Mean? |
When someone is planning to dig, Infrastructure Owners must provide locate responses for the infrastructure they own. Unless an infrastructure owner provides a clearance, locates come with field markings, usually flags and/or paint. Locate marks, be they paint, stakes or flags, should be in sufficient quantity and close enough together to clearly identify the horizontal alignment of the buried facilities. These field markings come in different colours to help identify which utility type is buried under the ground in that location. |
Why Does the Town Need Locates for Road Projects? |
It is the law. It is illegal to dig in Ontario without having located natural gas lines. |
