Call Before You Dig

Are you planning a home project? View the procedures to call before you dig. You need to get locates for all services and utilities before starting a project.

Locates

What Is a Utility Locate?

Prior to excavating, a utility locates request prompts utility owners to confirm the location of utilities that a project could potentially impact.

Utility owners will ensure that utilities within your project area are properly marked with paint and/or flags and that the excavator has an up-to-date drawing, or locate sketch, to avoid utility damage/strikes.

Like other municipalities, the Town of Saugeen Shores submits a locate request at the planning stage for any of its approved projects to determine the location of utilities.  Locates will assist in identifying issues with buried infrastructure for future planning initiatives.

Red & Orange Flags/Paint: What Do They Mean?

When someone is planning to dig, Infrastructure Owners must provide locate responses for the infrastructure they own.

Unless an infrastructure owner provides a clearance, locates come with field markings, usually flags and/or paint.

Locate marks, be they paint, stakes or flags, should be in sufficient quantity and close enough together to clearly identify the horizontal alignment of the buried facilities.

These field markings come in different colours to help identify which utility type is buried under the ground in that location.

White means proposed excavation. Pink means temporary survey markings. Red means electrical, lighting cables. Yellow manes gas, oil, steam. Orange means telephone, cable, tv, signals, alarm. Blue means potable water. Green means sanitary and storm sewers or culverts. Purple means reclaimed water, irrigation, slurry.

Why Does the Town Need Locates for Road Projects?

It is the law. It is illegal to dig in Ontario without having located natural gas lines.

Locate Requests

By filing a locate request, you are providing the Town (and/or its contractors) with locate information for:

  • Watermains and water service lines
  • Sanitary sewer mains
  • Stormwater pipes
  • Encroachments

The Town will also contact other utility companies like Hydro One, Bell Canada and Enbridge Gas, and supply information based on where you plan to dig.

You can request a utility locate by contacting Ontario One Call at 1-800-400-2255, or www.on1call.com.
