Under perfect weather conditions, the first public viewing of the state-of-the-art facility on June 4th was a resounding success.

The day exceeded the Public fundraising launch expectations, with close to a thousand visitors passing through the gates over the afternoon and four groups signing up for $10,000 Home Run donations:

  • The Devils Ladies’ fastball team
  • Caley Farms
  • Social Athletics of Saugeen Shores
  • Meridian Credit Union

The committee also received $5000 bleacher plaque donations from:

  • Vice Deputy Mayor and Committee Co-Chair Mike Myatt, his wife Jean and family
  • Committee Co-Chair Rob Stanley and family
  • Ken and Freda McKinnon and family

In addition, the Bisons and Weasels ball clubs made a fourth bleacher plaque announcement by donating a plaque to Saugeen Shores super-fan Vi Cottrill who was on hand. Those donations ensure that a plaque will remain on display on one of the eighteen sets of bleachers for twenty years.

Mayor Luke Charbonneau, alongside Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb and former Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker, addressed the park visitors and thanked the special guests, along with the Fundraising committee.

“Right from the beginning, this has been a community project”, said Mayor Charbonneau. “Now that community spirit carries on.  The committee has done a huge amount of work.  I’m absolutely certain they are going to not only hit their goal but they are going to exceed it, allowing us to build other Park elements ahead of schedule.”

The Committee gave special thanks to Enbridge, who sponsored the day’s events including providing food and drink for all park visitors.

“This Park is truly another example of Saugeen Shores defining itself as a vibrant, caring community,” said Stanley. “It is further evidence of the town’s commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, diversity and inclusive participation.”

The Phase 2 fundraising campaign’s original goal was to raise money through donations to help build two youth ball diamonds to complement the already completed Phase 1’s four adult diamonds as well as an Accessible playground to be built in late 2023.
