Mayor's Statement on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2024
Today, we observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day of reflection, learning, and commitment to understanding the profound impact of residential schools on Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
In Saugeen Shores, we are dedicated to building meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities, particularly the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, on whose traditional territory we live on. We recognize the truths of our shared history, and commit to listening, learning, and working towards meaningful reconciliation.
As a show of our support, the Town has flown the ‘Every Child Matters’ flag for the month of September. Today, this flag—along with the Canadian flag—are flying at half-mast.
We encourage all residents to wear orange clothing today and to take part in meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind.
Together, we can build a future grounded in respect, understanding, and reconciliation with the First Nations that enrich Canada. Let the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation be a day for action, healing, and hope.
