Saugeen Shores lowers flags to honor 215 children found at former Kamloops Indian Residential School
A statement from Mayor Luke Charbonneau
The Municipality’s flags have been lowered to half-mast to honor the 215 children whose remains were found on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc territory. The flags will remain lowered for a period of 215 hours, until sunset on June 8th.
This recent tragic discovery further illuminates the devastation the residential school system inflicted on First Nations. We grieve with the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc community and all First Nations people. The Town of Saugeen Shores will continue to recognize our indigenous communities, be mindful of our actions and support the quest for truth and reconciliation.
