Town Sustains Building Development in 2022

The Town continues to manage development growth as it showed strong commercial builds in 2022.
The number of new building permits for residential homes dipped to 111 houses. However, total construction value remains strong due to increased commercial and institutional development. As well, the number of permits issued for Additional Residential Units (ARUs) increased from five in 2021 to 18 in 2022; this represents an increase in new housing options, a key component of Council’s affordable housing strategy.
The Building Division continues to receive strong interest in commercial projects. The Division anticipates commercial growth will sustain high permit values as businesses move into the community and/or expand their operations to service the growing number of residents. Examples of this include the Goderich Street Commercial Centre, the Staybridge addition to the Holiday Inn, and the renovation of 187-189 High Street in Southampton.
“These numbers show the Town of Saugeen Shores continues to be a community of choice for people to live and work,” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “These projects provide homes and businesses to service our residents and our community's growth supports important capital projects like our new Aquatic & Wellness Centre."
The Town remains committed to managing and tracking the Town’s growth, while supporting the diversity of housing to meet the community’s needs.
