Two Major Recreational Hubs Move Closer to Reality

The Town is moving forward with the construction of two world-class recreational facilities after Council approved the conceptual design plans for an Aquatic & Wellness Centre, as well as Phase 2 of the Lamont Sports Park.

Council members followed through with a recommendation from staff and the project’s Prime Consultant to locate the Aquatic & Wellness Centre (AWC) east of the Plex, adjacent to Wellington St.  This location allows for the greatest flexibility when considering:

• The ability to phase in construction,
• Less disruption to existing operations at Municipal Office and Plex during construction,
• More physical real estate that allows for adjustments during the detailed design phase,
• Better site circulation for all amenities on-site, and
• The retention of natural light in Plex lobby and Municipal Offices.

Council has directed staff to return on December 12^th with a more detailed design and project budget.  The approved concept design came after the Town solicited residents’ input through a public meeting on August 31^st, as well as through public submissions and extensive interactions online. 

Members of Council also approved a conceptual design for Phase 2 of the Lamont Sports Park.  The project’s Prime Consultant presented the design with input from the Phase 2 Fundraising Ad Hoc Committee.  It includes two youth baseball fields, accessible playground, 200-seat pavilion, batting cages and storage building.  Council will review the design details on December 12^th.

“We are advancing these major projects to serve our active and growing population,” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “As we build these new facilities, we are enhancing the health of our residents and making Saugeen Shores a regional centre for sports and recreation.”

Construction for the AWC is projected to start in June 2023, with a public opening in Spring 2025.  Meanwhile, construction on the Lamont Sports Park Phase 2 is expected to commence in the spring of 2023.  Phase 1 of Lamont Sports Park officially opens in May of 2023.
