 Parks and Recreation

As a parks and recreation summer student, you will have the opportunity to work on one of the following crews listed below.

When applying to the parks and recreation summer student position, you will be asked to rank your top three positions. Preferences will be considered, but not guaranteed.

  • Waterfront Crew: 

Do you want to work where everyone else holidays? Join the Waterfront Crew and spend your days at the beach! This position will be assigned work along the waterfront of Saugeen Shores. The areas include Gobles Grove, Port Elgin and Southampton beaches. Duties include operation of half ton pick up truck, golf cart, grass cutting, removing beach debris, beach grooming, garbage collection, washroom cleaning and other general maintenance duties.

  • Sports Field Crew:

Is your happy place on a ball diamond or soccer pitch? Sports Field (Active Parks) Crew staff are responsible for maintaining the sports fields throughout the municipality. Duties include operation of half ton pick-up truck, tractor, dragging and lining ball diamonds, lining soccer fields and general maintenance to our parks.

  • Parks Garbage Crew: 

On this crew you travel throughout the town's streets, parks and waterfront emptying garbage bins and collecting litter. Duties include operation of mini packer, one ton truck, half ton pick-up truck, golf cart, ATV, emptying barrels in our Parks, Tourist Camps, main streets, and harbours and delivering waste to the Landfill Site. Premium of 50 cents/hr. on wage.

  • Washroom Crew: 

Are you proud of your community? Join this crew to help keep our washrooms and facilities clean and safe. Staff is responsible to maintain approximately 30+ seasonal facilities throughout the municipality. Duties include operation of half ton pick-up truck, cleaning, stocking, small repairs, general maintenance and upkeep of Town buildings. Premium of 50 cents/hr on wage.

  • Grass Crew:

Do you like spending time in the Town's green spaces and love the smell of freshly cut grass? Then join the grass crew. Grass Crew are responsible for cutting and maintaining grass in our 200+ acres of green space. Duties include operating half ton pick-up truck with trailer, tractor, riding mower, trimmers and push mowers.

  • Downtown/Horticulture Crew:

Do you have a green thumb? Love caring for gardens and making Southampton and Port Elgin downtowns beautiful, then join the Horticultural Crew. These crews are responsible for maintaining approximately 170 gardens & passive parks throughout the municipality. Duties include operation of half ton pick-up truck, planting, watering, weeding and general maintenance.

  • Facility Maintenance Crew:

Do you have a green thumb? Love caring for gardens and making Southampton and Port Elgin downtowns beautiful, then join the Horticultural Crew. These crews are responsible for maintaining approximately 170 gardens & passive parks throughout the municipality. Duties include operation of half ton pick-up truck, planting, watering, weeding and general maintenance.

  • Tourist Camp Attendants:

Staff are responsible for maintaining the two municipal Tourist Camps of 464 campsites (seasonal and transient). Duties include operation of half ton pick-up truck, golf cart, riding mower, push mower, trimmer, garbage collection, washroom cleaning and general maintenance. Office duties include registration, administration, handling of financial transactions and public inquiries.

  • Harbour Attendants: 

This front line staff is the first ambassador for the Town that boaters see upon arrival at the Port Elgin Harbour. Along with catering to visitors, harbour staff will keep busy making sure our 280 seasonal transient boaters are provided with the services they required. Duties include operating a half ton pick-up truck, golf cart, mooring, fueling and pumping out boats, garbage collection, washroom cleaning and general maintenance. Office duties include registration, administration, handling of financial transactions and public inquired. 

Note: VHF Radio Certification required (will train if required) and Bronze Medallion or higher will be considered an asset for the harbour positions. 

Pay: $15.50 to $17.00 per hour

Public Works
  • Public Works Summer Student:

This position assists the Public Works department in road maintenance, litter collective and general maintenance. This position is Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. 

Pay: $16.00 to $17.00 per hour

Tourism
  • Tourism Ambassadors: 

Are you proud to call Saugeen Shores your home? As the Tourism Ambassador you will promote and support tourism initiatives in Saugeen Shores. You will plan, promote and deliver programs and events throughout the Town. 

Pay: $19.00 to $20.00

  • Tourism Staff: 

Are you a high school student looking to gain experience with promotion and event planning? The tourism staff positions assist the tourism ambassadors in promoting and supporting tourism initiatives in Saugeen Shores. 

Pay: $14.60 to $15.60 per hour

 Administration and Co-Op opportunities

We offer positions (co-op and contract) in specialized areas like GIS/asset management, engineering, and office administration. Check your local university or college co-op board for summer opportunities to advance your knowledge and experience in your field of study. 

Pay: $16.00 to $20.00 per hour

The recruitment and selection process
  • We thank all candidates for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
  • Applications are reviewed in January. If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted by Human Resources to participate in a virtual interview beginning in January and into February of 2023.
  • If you are successful, you will receive a verbal offer followed by an electronic offer letter and required documentation from Human Resources.
Onboarding
  • Most summer positions will begin between mid-April and mid-may and will end at the end of August. 
  • All students will be required to complete mandatory training. Training will include a combination of online, virtual and in-person job specific training. 
  • An in-person orientation session will occur on May 8, 2023
  • We expect  all staff to understand and comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations. 
  • The Town takes workplace safety seriously and expects seasonal and summer staff to make it a top priority while employed with the Town. 
Additional information 
  • Most summer positions will begin between mid-April and mid-may and will end at the end of August. 
  • Parks, recreation, and public works summer positions will require a valid G or G2 driver's license. 
  • Some positions will be required to have standard First Aid certifications
