The Saugeen Shores Fire Department is committed to protecting the people and property of our community through emergency response services, fire prevention and public education efforts.

The Saugeen Shores Fire Department is seeking Volunteer Firefighters for the Port Elgin and Southampton Fire Stations, who have a desire to protect our community and who take pride in providing a high level of service and support to the Town of Saugeen Shores.

 Volunteer Firefighter Duties
As a volunteer firefighter, you must perform a number of tasks including manual work of a hazardous nature involving the fighting of fires, salvage, rescue work and first aid, generally under the direct supervision of Department Officers. You may be required to make decisions and work without supervision until an officer arrives at the scene. You will complete regular training and perform maintenance work of the fire station and equipment as required.  
 Application Requirements
  • You must be at least 18 years of age
  • You must reside within the Town of Saugeen Shores.
  • Hold a valid Class G Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a DZ license within two (2) years of employment.
  • The applicant must be willing complete all training to achieve NFPA 1001 Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 for Firefighting Qualifications, Hazmat NFPA 172 within two years of employment.
  • Are able to pass a physical and medical screening.
  • Upon request by the Saugeen Shores Fire Department, a recent, satisfactory Criminal Background Check and Vulnerable Sector Check, and clean Driver's Abstract must be provided.
 Application Process

The application submission is the first step in the recruitment process where applicants prepare their cover letter, resume and additional documentation to submit with their application. Applicants will submit completed documentation online on the Town of Saugeen Shores’ Careers page. Please review the job posting to ensure you are submitting all required materials as part of your application.

During the application process, applicants will submit their required documentation (e.g. NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I and Level II) and answer a series of pre-screening questions related to the job.

Once the application is complete, you will receive an email confirming that your application has been submitted successfully.

 Selection Process

Applicants will complete an aptitude test (30 minutes) followed by an interview (50 minutes) conducted by the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, and other members of the Fire Department and Human Resources.

Shortlisted applicants will be required to complete a job specific physical capability test as per NFPA standards. Only selected applicants who provide a satisfactory Medical Examination Report, Consent Waiver and Release Form will have the opportunity to participate in physical testing.

Conditional Offer of Employment

To be eligible to continue further in the process the following conditions must be met:

  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check and Criminal Background Check (satisfactory to the Town): You will be required to obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector Check at your own expense.
  • Medical Assessment
  • Reference Checks (References must be employment-related and someone that you report or reported to)
  • Valid Class “DZ” or “G” license with 0 demerit points (satisfactory to the Town), including a Driver’s Abstract Check that is satisfactory to the Town. 
 Information Session

The Fire department is hosting an information session on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at 7:00 pm at the Port Elgin Fire Station located at 612 Emma St., Port Elgin. 

You must register for this event in order to participate. Register early as spots are limited! Registration closes on December 13, 2022 at 4:30 pm.
