Become a Volunteer Firefighter

The Saugeen Shores Fire Department is committed to protecting the people and property of our community through emergency response services, fire prevention and public education efforts. 

The Saugeen Shores Fire Department is seeking Volunteer Firefighters for the Port Elgin and Southampton Fire Stations, who have a desire to protect our community and take pride in providing a high level of service and support to the Town of Saugeen Shores. 

As a volunteer firefighter, you must perform a number of tasks including manual work of a hazardous nature involving the fighting of fires, salvage, rescue work and first aid, generally under the direct supervision of Department Officers.  

You may be required to make decisions and work without supervision until an officer arrives at the scene. You will complete regular training and perform maintenance work of the fire station and equipment as required.  

  • You must be at least 18 years of age 

  • You must reside within the Town of Saugeen Shores 

  • Hold a valid Class G Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a DZ license within two (2) years of employment 

  • The applicant must be willing complete all training to achieve NFPA 1001 Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 for Firefighting Qualifications, Hazmat NFPA 470 within two years of employment 

  • Pass a physical and medical screening 

  • Provide a recent, satisfactory Criminal Background Check, Vulnerable Sector Check, and clean Driver's Abstract

Chosen applicants will complete an aptitude test (30 minutes) followed by an interview (50 minutes) conducted by the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief and other members of the Fire Department and Human Resources. 

Shortlisted applicants will be required to complete a job specific physical capability test as per National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. Only selected applicants who provide a satisfactory Medical Examination Report, Consent Waiver and Release Form will have the opportunity to participate in physical testing. 

To be eligible to continue further in the process the following conditions must be met: 

  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check and Criminal Background Check (satisfactory to the Town): You’ll be required to obtain a Police Vulnerable Sector Check at your own expense. 

  • Medical Assessment 

  • Reference Checks (References must be employment-related and someone that you report or reported to) 

  • Valid Class “DZ” or “G” license
