History and Heritage

The Town of Saugeen Shores was formed in 1998 through the amalgamation of Port Elgin, Southampton and Saugeen Township. These communities have roots dating back to the early 1800s.

Historically a key marine port, the area has long had a strong agricultural, industrial and commercial presence that is celebrated by Heritage Awards, Heritage Properties and Historical Tours.

Southampton is also home to the Bruce County Museum.

The Municipal Heritage Committee's mandate is to preserve the history of Saugeen Shores.

The Committee Meetings take place throughout the calendar year. View the Committee agendas and minutes using the Council Calendar.
