About Saugeen Shores
Saugeen Shores is a lakeside community rooted in the history of three former municipalities. While the Town itself was created in 1998 through amalgamation, its story reaches back to the early 1800s when settlers first established Port Elgin, Southampton, and Saugeen Township. These communities grew around a busy marine port and a strong agricultural, industrial, and commercial economy.
Honouring Our Heritage
Our community continues to recognize the places and stories that shaped us. The Town maintains an active role in identifying and preserving heritage properties, and we celebrate local achievements through programs such as the Heritage Award. Historic sites, landmarks, and self guided walking tours give residents and visitors a chance to explore the character of our past.
The Communities That Built Us
Each of the original municipalities contributed its own identity and traditions.
-
Port Elgin, known for its vibrant main street and shoreline.
-
Southampton, rich with cultural landmarks and deep Indigenous connections along the Saugeen River.
-
Saugeen Township, home to expansive rural landscapes and agricultural roots.
Together, they form the community we know today.
The Path To Amalgamation
In the late 1990s, the Province moved to merge smaller municipalities to improve service efficiency and reduce administrative costs. On January 30, 1998, a Minister’s Restructuring Order brought Port Elgin, Southampton, and Saugeen Township together. A later amendment formalized the name The Corporation of the Town of Saugeen Shores. The goal of this change was to streamline operations without reducing local services or access to elected officials.
A Connected And Resilient Economy
The combined strength of the three communities has created a diverse economic landscape. Rural farmland, lively town centres, and the shores of Lake Huron and the Saugeen River all contribute to the character of the Town. Agriculture, small business, tourism, and industry continue to serve as the foundation of our local economy, just as they have for generations.
Saugeen Shores stands today as a growing community that balances heritage, natural beauty, and modern opportunity.
