Recreational (public) skating

Ball hockey

Ball hockey registration is open. View program information online. This is a co-ed program that focuses on skill development and game play for ages 3 to 15.

Program Details

The 2023 season runs from May 3 to June 20, 1 night per week, including May 22 (Victoria Day). League nights differ from local basketball and soccer programs. 

  • Fee: $99 per player, includes team shirt and award
  • Register: Online February 1 starting at 6am
  • Location: The Plex in Port Elgin
  • Required equipment: Safety approved helmet with cage, hockey stick and gloves, shin guards (soccer style) and indoor running shoes. A jock or jill is recommended.

Registered arena programs

Adult Beginner Hockey (Level 1)

Returning in Fall 2023.

We've partnered up with local hockey coach Bill Buckton to deliver this beginner program designed for adults with basic skating skills and no hockey experience. Participants will learn the fundamentals of hockey and focus on skill development over the 5-week session.

Adult Beginner Hockey (Level 2)

Returning in Fall 2023.

This program provides you the opportunity to get on the ice and play with others of the same basic skill level. The intention is for everyone to practice, play the game and continue to develop their skills. This is a great next step for those who participated in level 1of the beginner hockey program. There is limited instruction.

Kamps for Kids' specialty summer camps

Kamps for Kids specialty summer camps are half-day, weeklong programs that run from 9am to 12pm. Programs are based out of the Southampton Coliseum, Jubilee Park, and North Shore Park (August 21 to 25). Camps are for ages 4 to 12 years. Fee: $190 per week.

Registration opens February 1 at 6am online. Programs are open for viewing online.

July 10 to 14, Colour Me Crazy!

Join us for a week of all colours and rainbows! We can’t wait to explore creativity with all the colours and sparkles. This week includes tie-dying, colouring, painting, crafting with plenty of colourful materials and plenty of colourful games. Activity number: 22565

July 17 to 21, Adventure Unlimited

This program will spark your kid's sense of adventure! Campers will take part in team challenges, obstacle courses, relay races, scavenger hunts, jump rope games and so much more. Join us for an adventure-filled week! Activity number: 22566

July 24 to 28, Fun and Fitness

Let’s get active! Kids will be engaged in a fun, high energy week emphasizing the importance of having fun! We will focus on fundamental movement skills and developing athletic skills through fun and playful activities. Activity number: 22567

July 31 to August 4, Wet and Wild!

There is no better way to embrace the heat of a summer day than a little water play! Get ready for some fun in the sun with some refreshing water activities and games, as well as the splash pad! Bathing suits, towels and sunscreen required! Pick up at Coliseum. Activity number: 22568

August 14 to 18, Down to a Science

This program will spark your kid’s naturally curious mind while inspiring a love for science! During this week we will be doing all things science experimenting, exploring, observing and recording our findings. Activity number: 22569

August 21 to 25, The Great Outdoors

Young nature enthusiasts will spend the week exploring and uncovering the beauty and mysteries of our great outdoors through different daily adventures! Each day will be filled with games, exploratory hikes, eco activities and crafts. Come explore with us! Activity number: 22570

Kamps for Kids offer evening programs, Active Kids and PA day, March Break and specialty summer camps. Drop down each menu below for more information on the programs.

Kids in the Kitchen, April 5, 12, 19

Ages 4 to 12 years, 5-6:30pm, activity number: 22344, fee $75

Cooking with kids at any age can be fun! Children will learn how to cook simple, inexpensive, tasty and healthy meals and snacks. Special guests will talk about healthy eating, and teach us how to make healthy recipes

Kickstart to Kindergarten, May 1, 8, 15

Ages 3 to 4 years, 5-6pm, activity number: 22571, fee $60

Preparing kids for their fun upcoming school adventures! Get a jump on math, science, literacy, arts and activity through crafts and games.

Active Kids

During Active Kids toddlers to preschoolers, walking to 5 years, develop agility, balance and coordination through movement and play. Caregiver participation required for kids under 3 years.

The program runs from 5:30-6:15pm at the Plex and is $35 per session.

Day camps

Kamps for Kids' full-day (9am-4pm) camps offer fun, interactive days that keep kids 4 to 12 years active, creative and engaged while making new friends. Camps include skating beginning in October and a pizza lunch on PA days. Skating is optional.

Fees vary by camp, visit our online registration portal. Camps operate at the Green Room in the Southampton Coliseum.

Drop-in Kids Fun Zone (2023 dates)

The Kids Fun Zone is operated by Kamps for Kids and offers drop-in open, unstructured movement and play for kids 0 to 6 years. Upcoming dates in 2023 include:

  • Friday, April 14 (last spring session)
  • Drop-in from 9:30 to 11:30am
  • Rotary Hall at the Plex in Port Elgin
  • $10 per family
  • Parent/caregiver must be present with children

Payment by cash, debit or credit card is available. If paying by debit or credit card, please pay at the municipal office on the main floor of the Plex before entering Rotary Hall.

Community sports and recreation 

Many community sports and recreation programs are provided by several local organizations, associations and clubs. Visit our community page for a full contact listing of sports, recreation and leisure groups.

The Town operates recreational facilities that community groups rent or lease (long-term) including these minor sports programs:

Program Policies

Programs and events photo consent

Participants can consent or not consent when registering for programs and events online.

I am a consenting adult/legal guardian and hereby authorize the Town of Saugeen Shores to use my and or my dependent(s) name and or image in its public relations and communication materials. I understand that the photograph(s) taken within a year from today’s date during Town programs, events or in Town facilities may be used in a publication, print advertisement, direct-mail pieces, electronic media (e.g., video, website, social media, etc.) or other form of communication.

In giving my consent, I hereby release and hold harmless the Town of Saugeen Shores and their agents, employees, officials, representatives and contractors from any and all responsibility or liability for damage of any kind suffered in any manner whatsoever. I hereby relinquish any and all personal or proprietary rights I may have in connection with such use. I understand that I will receive no compensation should any photograph of me and or my dependents be used.

Refund policy

The refund policy applies to dryland and aquatic programs operated by the Department of Community Services (Town-operated) and operated by program providers under contract with the Department of Community Services (Town-contracted). If an exception to this policy applies, it will be indicated at the time of registration.

  1. If a program is cancelled by Community Services, a full or partial refund will apply depending on number of classes attended
  2. Program fees for Town-operated and Town-contracted program, both dry-land and aquatic are refundable up to two weeks (14 days) prior to a program’s start date. A full refund, less the $20.00 administration fee will apply.
  3. No refunds will be issued within two weeks (14 days) of a program start date except for COVID-19 related and medical reasons, or if a vacancy can be filled through the waiting list.
  4. For program withdrawal during programs due to COVID-19 related or medical reasons, the participant will be refunded for number of classes remaining, less the $20 administration fee.
  5. For Town-operated programs, if a refund credit is left on account for future use, the administration fee is not charged. This does not apply for Town-contracted programs.

Recreation waiver

Participants are required to agree to the recreation waiver at the time of registration.

In consideration of Myself, Son, Daughter or Ward being admitted into the programs operated by any department falling under the auspices of the Department of Community Services, I hereby release the Corporation of the Town of Saugeen Shores from all claims for damages incurred from any accident or injury which is caused by or arises from participation of the applicant herein, during any program, or in any facility on any location, where a program is being conducted. I hereby give permission for the person in charge, to enact the municipal emergency action procedure, including activating the community emergency system, in the event of an accident involving the above-mentioned participant.
