What are Development Charges?

Development charges are used to pay capital projects that are needed to meet the increased demand for services and infrastructure that is generated by growth. More people mean more vehicles on our roads and more demand for town services.

Development charges are fees charged to each new development that offset these increased costs. Without development charges, the bill for increasing or improving services gets added to the property taxes of current residents. Development charges are payable when a building permit is issued.

Background Study - Public Input Needed

On April 11, 2023, the Council of the Town of Saugeen Shores will hold a virtual, online public meeting, pursuant to Section 12 of the Development Charges Act, 1997, to present and obtain public input on an amending Development Charges Background Study and proposed amending by-law relating to the Town’s current Development Charges By-law 56-2021.

It is proposed that enactment of the amending Development Charges By-Law will occur after this public meeting at a later date. Development Charges are levied against new development and are the primary source of funding for growth-related capital expenditures. The amendment will only affect the capital service related to indoor recreation.

All interested parties are invited to attend the Public Meeting. Any person who attends the meeting may make representation relating to the draft Amending Development Charges Background Study and the proposed Development Charges Amending By-Law.

Virtual Meeting:  April 11, 2023 6:30 p.m.

Location:  www.saugeenshores.ca/meetings

Copies of the draft amending Development Charges Background Study and the proposed Development Charges Amending By-Law are available at the Town Office, at the address shown above and at this link:
