Building Services issue temporary tent permits to those looking to set up a tent or group of tents.

When do I need a temporary tent permit?

You need to apply for a temporary tent permit when you are setting up tents that are:

  • More than 60 m² in an area (single tent and group of tents)
  • Attached to a building
  • Assembled less than three metres from other buildings or structures

How to apply for a tent permit

Complete the following steps to apply for a temporary tent permit:

  • Complete an Application for a Permit to Construct or Demolish or pick up a paper copy at our municipal office
    • In the "Description of proposed work" field, include the dimensions of your temporary tent and how long the tent will remain on site (ex. 20m x 20m Temporary Tent, August 6 to 12)
  • Complete the Schedule 1: Designer Information form or pick up a paper copy at our municipal office
  • Complete the Commitment for General Review form or pick up a paper copy at our municipal office
  • View our Tent Permit Requirements for any further documents you may need depending on the size of your tent or group of tents
  • Submit your completed application and required documents one of the following ways:

    • In person or by mail to the Municipal Office at 600 Tomlinson Drive PO Box 820 Port Elgin ON N0H2C4

    • By email to Building Services. Please note, you will be charged a printing fee ($18.08 per page larger than 11x17”, $.36 per page smaller than 11x17”) when submitting by email as we require physical copies of required documents.

A temporary tent permit fee is $83.64. We waive permit fees for non-profit and charitable organizations. View our methods of payment accepted.
