Intention to Designate a Property / Ontario Heritage Act - 43 Grosvenor St N, Southampton
The Council of the Town of Saugeen Shores intends to designate the following property for reasons of cultural heritage value or interest pursuant to the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, Chapter O.18, Part IV:
43 Grosvenor St N, Southampton, further described as TP PT LOT 1 E GROSVENOR, Town of Saugeen Shores (Southampton).
The property contains a one-storey Ontario Cottage constructed in 1895. The building has design and physical value as a representative example of a nineteenth-century Ontario Cottage and retains characteristic features of the style, including its one-storey form, hipped roof, rough-cast exterior cladding, symmetrical composition, and original window openings.
The property has historical and associative value through its direct associations with individuals significant to the history of Southampton. The dwelling was constructed by William McGregor, a local businessman who served as Reeve and Mayor of Southampton; was later owned and occupied by John Donald MacLeod, a commercial fisherman, community leader, and participant in notable marine rescue operations on Lake Huron; and was subsequently the retirement home of James Augustus Watton, Anglican Archbishop of Moosonee and Metropolitan of Ontario.
The property has contextual value because it contributes to and supports the historic nineteenth-century character of the surrounding residential neighbourhood. The property is visually and historically linked to the concentration of historic residences within Southampton’s original settlement area and is associated with the community’s marine heritage through its relationship to the commercial fishing activities of the MacLeod family on the Saugeen River harbour.
The heritage attributes of the property include:
-
The setback, placement, and orientation of the building on the lot;
-
The original one-storey hipped-roof form and massing of the cottage;
-
The wood-frame construction with rough-cast exterior cladding;
-
The size, placement, and configuration of the original window openings, including the pointed Gothic-style window frame details on the west, north, and south elevations; and,
-
The original front entrance door, preserved within the enclosed porch.
