Mayor’s Statement for National Indigenous Peoples Day 2025

On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we honour and celebrate the diverse cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.

In Saugeen Shores, we take this opportunity to recognize that the Town is located on the traditional lands and treaty territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, which includes the Chippewas of Saugeen and the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation. We are grateful to live, work, and gather on this land, and we remain committed to ongoing learning, respect, and reconciliation.

This year holds particular significance for our communities. On January 31, 2025, Saugeen First Nation and the Town of Saugeen Shores completed the First Nations–Municipal Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI) program and signed a historic Friendship Accord. This partnership builds a strong foundation for ongoing reconciliation, collaboration, and meaningful relationship-building.

As we reflect on the spirit of National Indigenous Peoples Day, we reaffirm our commitment to strengthening partnerships, acknowledging shared histories, and working together toward a more inclusive and respectful future.

I encourage all residents to take part in events, explore Indigenous history and culture, and recognize the enduring presence and leadership of Indigenous Peoples in our community.
