Mayor’s Statement for National Indigenous Peoples Day 2026
On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada. This day offers an opportunity to reflect on the enduring presence of Indigenous communities, and to appreciate the knowledge, traditions, and perspectives that continue to shape our country.
In Saugeen Shores, we acknowledge that the Town is located on the traditional lands and treaty territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, which includes the Chippewas of Saugeen and the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation. We remain committed to deepening our understanding, building respectful relationships, and advancing reconciliation together.
This year, we also recognize the continued progress made through the Friendship Accord between Saugeen First Nation and the Town of Saugeen Shores. Since its signing, the Accord has guided meaningful collaboration, strengthened relationships, and supported joint initiatives that benefit both communities. Notably, the Town and Saugeen First Nation signed a 20-year extension to our Water Service Agreement, ensuring safe drinking water is provided to the Nation. This ongoing work reflects a shared commitment to building understanding, fostering opportunity, and moving forward together in the spirit of partnership.
On Friday, the Town will raise the Saugeen First Nation flag, where it will remain throughout the weekend as a visible sign of respect and recognition. We encourage residents to take time over the coming days to reflect, learn, and celebrate Indigenous cultures and contributions in our community. As we mark National Indigenous Peoples Day, let us continue to listen, learn, and walk together on a path of respect, reconciliation, and shared future.
