Mayor's Statement for the National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women (2025)

On December 6, we come together to honor the memory of the 14 women whose lives were tragically taken at Polytechnique Montréal in 1989. Their loss remains a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of gender-based violence and the urgent need for change.

Meaningful progress requires action. Each of us has a role to play in challenging harmful attitudes and stereotypes, supporting survivors, and advocating for equality. By working together, we can transform remembrance into action and ensure that the legacy of those 14 women is one of hope and progress.

As we mark this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, the Town of Saugeen Shores will lower our flags in solemn tribute. Let us all reaffirm our shared responsibility to build a future where safety and respect are fundamental rights for everyone. Community members are invited to attend the CFUW Southport’s 35th Annual Vigil at The Plex in Port Elgin on December 6, from 12:00 to 12:30 p.m., to reflect and stand in solidarity against gender-based violence.
