Mayor's Statement on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2026

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the Survivors of residential schools, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the enduring strength of Indigenous families, communities, and cultures in the face of the profound and lasting impacts of residential schools. We recognize that these impacts affect Indigenous peoples today. We all share a responsibility to learn from that history, acknowledge it, and work toward truth and reconciliation – which begins with each and every one of us.  

Because our community is located on the traditional territory of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation, residents of Saugeen Shores have a special responsibility to commit to fostering relationships grounded in learning with respect. We are grateful for this land and are committed to strengthening relationships with our Indigenous neighbours, the Chippewas of Saugeen. 

Saugeen Shores and Saugeen First Nation have a strong working bond through the Friendship Accord: Wiijkiwenydiwaad Miinwa Zgaabiignigan (“Friends with one another, and we are connected”). The accord is a shared promise to build lasting relationships through collaboration, to foster a future of mutual respect, and to walk forward together. Over the past year, our partnership has moved from commitment to action through initiatives such as the shared Community Tourism Strategy and renewed Water Service Agreement, further strengthening our relationship. 

Today, I encourage all residents to wear orange, take time to learn about the history and legacy of residential schools, listen to Indigenous voices and experiences, and reflect on what reconciliation means in their own lives. Together, we can help create a future that honours the truth, respects Indigenous rights and cultures, and strengthens relationships for generations to come.
