Residents Encouraged to Reduce Water Usage
Due to recent hot, dry weather and a corresponding increase in water consumption, the Town of Saugeen Shores is encouraging residents to voluntarily reduce their water usage, particularly when it comes to lawn irrigation.
Lawn watering is one of the highest contributors to residential water use during the summer months. To help ease the demand on the municipal water system, residents are asked to limit or temporarily pause lawn watering and other high-consumption activities such as car washing, pressure washing, or filling pools. The Town is also taking steps to reduce its own outdoor water usage.
The Town offers the following tips to reduce irrigation consumption:
-
Water lawns less frequently
-
Cut watering time by 30%
-
Remember to turn off automatic sprinklers when rain is happening or forecasted
-
Keep grass longer to protect roots and reduce watering needs
Residents are also reminded to water in accordance with the Municipal By-law to minimize evaporation and maximize efficiency. The By-law allows watering between 7:00–9:00 a.m. or 7:00–9:00 p.m., with even addresses watering on even days and odd addresses watering on odd days. Watering restrictions do not apply to households connected to private water systems such as Sandpoints or private wells. Please ensure a “Lawn Watered by Sandpoint/Well” sign is visible from the road.
The Town thanks all residents for their cooperation and commitment to responsible water use during this period of hot, dry weather. For more information on water conservation, visit www.saugeenshores.ca/Watering.
The Town of Saugeen Shores has made significant commitments to water system improvements to expand capacity for existing demand and future growth. More information on these projects can be found in the Saugeen Shores 2025 Business Plan under Operations Major Initiatives (pg. 80) and Operations Capital Highlights (pg. 84).
