Saugeen Shores and Saugeen First Nation Develop Joint Community Tourism Strategy

Saugeen Shores and Saugeen First Nation have approved a new joint Community Tourism Strategy which will serve as a shared roadmap guiding tourism development and collaboration over the next five years. 

The goal of the strategy is to support sustainable, year-round tourism while balancing the needs of residents, visitors, local businesses, and the natural environment. It also aims to strengthen partnerships, celebrate local identity and culture, and create meaningful experiences that connect people to the region. 

"Tourism is an opportunity to share the stories, culture, landscapes, and experiences that make our communities unique," said Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau. "This strategy reflects our commitment to working together with Saugeen First Nation to create a destination that benefits residents, supports local businesses, and encourages stewardship of the lands and waters we all value."  

"This Community Tourism Strategy reflects what is possible when we work together with respect and a shared vision for the future,” said Saugeen First Nation Chief Conrad Ritchie. “It creates opportunities to share the rich history, culture, and traditions of Saugeen First Nation while promoting responsible tourism that honours our lands, waters, and people. We look forward to continuing this partnership in a way that benefits both of our communities for generations to come.” 

Informed by community engagement, visitor data, and input from residents, businesses, and community partners, the strategy identifies several key opportunities for the future of local tourism, including: 

• Strengthening collaboration between Saugeen Shores and Saugeen First Nation 

• Celebrating and promoting Indigenous culture, history, and storytelling 

• Expanding four-season tourism opportunities beyond beaches and summer visitation 

• Supporting environmental stewardship and responsible tourism 

• Creating authentic visitor experiences that reflect the unique identities of Port Elgin, Southampton, and Saugeen First Nation 

• Supporting local businesses and community well-being through sustainable tourism growth 

This collaborative strategy is an action item of the Friendship Accord, Wiijkiwenydiwaad Miinwa Zgaabiignigan ("Friends with one another and we are connected"), signed by Saugeen Shores and Saugeen First Nation in 2025. Through the Accord, both communities committed to strengthening relationships and working together on shared priorities that benefit residents, businesses, and visitors.

The Joint Community Tourism Strategy is a Major Initiative of Development Services in the 2026 Town of Saugeen Shores Business Plan (pg. 60).
