Southampton 150th Anniversary Legacy Fund donates to Southampton Cenotaph Rejuvenation Project
The Town of Saugeen Shores is proud to recognize and thank the Southampton 150th Anniversary Legacy Fund committee for a generous donation in support of the Southampton Cenotaph Rejuvenation project.
“We are very pleased to present this cheque for $91,300 to the Cenotaph renovation,” said Joanne Robbins, speaking on behalf of the Legacy Fund committee. “It is a truly worthy project which so beautifully meets our criteria.”
The Legacy Fund arose from the Southampton 150th Anniversary celebrations in 2008, which ended with a surplus thanks to overwhelming support and community participation. To be eligible for the Legacy Fund, a project had to be located in Southampton, have a component celebrating Southampton history, and have a permanent presence which can be enjoyed by all.
The Southampton Cenotaph Rejuvenation project includes enhancements to the High and Huron Street intersection to honor veterans of Southampton and Saugeen First Nation. It includes two memorial walls on the southwest and northwest corners, restoration of the existing Cairn and Cross, and landscaping on the traffic island for improved aesthetics and accessibility. The project also includes the relocation of the Mosquito Bomber Interpretive Plaque and the installation of a duplicate of the Women in Military Interpretive Plaque.
“This project is about remembrance, respect, and community pride,” said Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “We are grateful for the support from the Southampton 150th Anniversary Legacy Fund which will help ensure the Cenotaph remains a meaningful and accessible place for generations to come.”
The Southampton Cenotaph Rejuvenation project was included as a Major Initiative for Community Services in the 2025 Saugeen Shores Business Plan (pg 24). The work will be completed during Phase Two of the High Street Reconstruction project in 2026.
