Town Recognizes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
The Town of Saugeen Shores is experiencing the same demographic change as many other communities across Canada and the world; namely, the rapid growth in the number of people aged 65 and over. Unfortunately, as that cohort grows, so does the prevalence of elder abuse as both a public health issue and a human rights issue.
It is both heartbreaking and unacceptable that people who have long been vibrant and contributing members of society should now face physical violence, mental degradation, and outright neglect as they become more vulnerable. These older citizens deserve our respect and our care.
Saugeen Shores Town Council joins the Grey Bruce Elder Abuse Prevention Network – along with communities across the globe – in recognizing June 15, 2023, as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to put a spotlight on this growing problem.
